Situated in the central North Island the geographically and culturally diverse region of Waikato, New Zealand, is an under-explored gem waiting to be discovered.
Enter the world of The Lord of The Rings – filmed right here – or take a peek into the lives of locals at walking trails or cosy flea markets.
Here’s (only the beginning of) what’s beautiful in Waikato!
1. Although it’s not far from Auckland, many people have not heard of Waikato – despite the fact that it’s home to Hobbiton from The Lord of the Rings!
2. Waikato during summer (December to February) has average highs of 23 degrees C and lows of 12 degrees C, making it perfect for outdoor activities and exploring the region.
6. But the rest of the region is also equally charming. Out by the countryside, quaint old farmhouses dot the grassy hills and plains.
7. If you’re lucky, get to know the lives of the friendly folks there. This man has lived in his house all his life. There’s no place like home!
