4 AWESOME Reasons To Visit Shenzhen, China, Instead Of Shanghai Or Beijing

Find out why it's said to be the metropolis of the East.

Shenzhen’s gone from sleepy city to the world’s hardware capital, where tech giants like Huawei are headquartered. Visit this modern hub during the cooler autumn period of October to December.

Where To Eat & Drink

Shenzhen’s “eat streets” gather cheap eateries serving food from all over China. Try the city’s original Bagua First Road Eat Street for excellent snake dishes when in season (October to January). Dongmen Pedestrian Street, located in the city’s shopping haven, features international cuisines. Wash it all down with a lager by Shenzhen Kingway Brewery. What To Do

Fairy Lake Botanical Gardens stretches for miles over valleys and rivers, and is peppered with teahouses. Architecture buffs will love the Shenzhen Poly Theatre for its futuristic egg design. (Xianhu Rd; Baoli Wenhua Square, Houhaibin Rd)

Where to Shop

Get all kinds of electronics at Hua Qiang Bei (imagine SG’s Sim Lim Square on steroids), or browse the shelves at Shenzhen Book City – supposedly the world’s largest bookstore. (Corner of Hua Qiang N Rd and Shennan M Rd; Fuzhong 1st Rd)

Where To Stay

The Somerset Grandview Shenzhen offers serviced apartments (from $155 a night) with a view. Splurge at the Futian Shangri-La (from $241 a night) to get a top-class outdoor swimming pool and spa.

Getting There & Around

There are at least three direct flights a day on affordable carriers like China Southern Airlines, with more daily flights available to Hong Kong, where you can take the MTR rail to the Luohu border crossing. Travel the city with the Shenzhen Tong stored-value card, across metro and bus networks. Didi Chuxing – China’s Uber – works well, too.
