A wide array of events at this year's Singapore Design Week

By Maureen Courcenet, Finder Blogger: The Design Maven, and founder of Signé Design.

After Art Week in January, Design Week is already upon us in Singapore!

Singapore Design Week

The Singapore Design Week organised by the Design Singapore Council takes place over a fortnight from 8 to 20 March 2016. It’s going big this year with more than 100 design events from trade shows to interactive design installations, lifestyle events and craft workshops.

Each and everyone of us depends on good design in our everyday lives. So what is design?

Design isn’t simply about making a room look pretty. Design is interior, design is fashion, design is engineering… From the perfect shape of your toothbrush to the cockpit of a plane to the flattering cut of that little black dress to the unequalled mix of ergonomic and aesthetic that is the IPhone. Here’s a quote from one of my personal design heroines that perfectly captures the essence of design:

“… after all, design is about responding to the gestures of the human being.”
– Charlotte Perriand, 20th century French designer and architect.

So why not make full use of Design Week to discover more about it?

What’s on the agenda?

I’ll personally be spending days sniffing out the very best and very new in design with an array of international fairs coming to our shores: it’s off to Maison&Objet Asia, the International Furniture Fair Singapore and the Décor Show!

Whilst those fairs are reserved to the trade, there’s plenty of design-ful events for everyone to enjoy! All to be found by clicking here.

My top picks?

1. Experience Design

Visit the exhibition “Fifty Years of Singapore Design” at the National Design Centre to discover iconic designs and their backstories that have shaped the nation from the fields of Environmental Design, Fashion & Accessories, Product & Industrial Design and Visual Communications.

Discover the newly hip-area of Keong Saik Road with the fist ever “Urban Ventures” street party and carnival on 12 March. Designers and artists will take over the street with installations, workshops and tours.

Go green with landscape design tours discovering one of the world’s largest vertical gardens with “Tierra” or one of Singapore’s eco-parks with “Walk in the Park”.

Hop on and off the Design Trail on 19-20 March to experience “Thoughtful Design” at a specially curated line-up of design places.

2. Be the Designer:

Get creative with the “Design for Everyone” workshops on 14-15 March; these free beginner workshops for all ages will unveil the art and craft of bookbinding, printmaking and calligraphy.

Try your hand at glass painting, jewellery, fabric, terrarium, soap and even ceramic doll making! And be inspired by a select display of made in Singapore products at the “Design and Make Fair” from 8 to 20 March.

3. Reward yourself with Design-ful treats:

Indulge in the shopping extravangaza that is Boutiques at the Pit Building on 11-12 March. Check out the art of Julie Williams, a perfect blend of east meets west where the brush of an Australian painter meets the brightly coloured world of the Peranakans!

Shop guilt-free thanks to the so-called “Perks” events aka incredible offers from designer boutiques to F&B at high-end hotels. One of my newest and instant favourite discoveries, homegrown Singaporean specialist retailer Teapot & Giraffe is offering 20% off!
