Exposing children to the outdoors helps them appreciate their environment more
As infants and preschoolers begin to investigate and learn more about their environment, Kinderland makes sure to promote green habits in its curriculum, while also incorporating lots of playtime in nature. Find out more about the unique offerings at its Yio Chu Kang campus.
At Yio Chu Kang’s newly-renovated centre, children get to explore 12,140 square metres of eco-friendly space, including vegetable, herb and butterfly gardens as well as pets corner, which houses rabbits. During daily supervised nature walks, little ones are encouraged to look out for caterpillars, butterflies and snails — and are even provided with iPads to help identify species or take photos of their finds!
This is all part of the plan: Kinderland ensures that students are not only well-prepared for formal schooling and equipped to be lifelong learners, but also that they enjoy their childhood through interacting outdoors.
“Parents love the idea of a pet corner! They bring along some vegetables for their kids to feed the rabbits and love watching their kids play in our compound,” says Amy Lim, principal at Kinderland Yio Chu Kang. “Sometimes, we even have daddies playing there with children after pick-up time.”
During regular gardening sessions, each class is assigned a plot of land to document the process of seedlings growing into mature plants.
“Teachers will source for different types of seeds, and the kids decide which ones they want to plant. Once they’ve started planting, the class takes responsibility in ensuring that the seedlings are watered and weeds are removed. When they’re ready for harvest, the kids will gather the produce. The harvest will then be passed on to the cook who’ll prepare it for lunch,” explains Principal Amy.
