This 1 March, 2019, marks EtonHouse International School @ Orchard‘s first birthday. And, what a year it’s been!
Opening its doors on Orchard Road, the boutique school was designed by EtonHouse students and staff themselves to be uniquely suited for collaboration and a cutting-edge education. (Check out The Finder‘s video below to see the campus for yourself!)
Beyond the incredible facilities, EtonHouse @ Orchard is rapidly establishing itself as an academic leader, thanks to its flexible, project-based learning approach, which is personalised for every student.

EtonHouse @ Orchard has an individual mentoring programme, where each student meets with an assigned teacher every 15 days. “Using the results from our social emotional assessment test, the teacher coaches the student through topics like mindfulness and philosophy, and even discusses current affairs with them,” explains Jolene Lee, International Brand and Marketing Manager for EtonHouse International Education Group.
Principal Alec Jiggins (shown) is a supportive presence, too. As he shared with The Finder, the school’s MakerSpace is his favourite spot in the 19,000-square-foot campus. “The MakerSpace encourages creativity, collaboration and problem solving, and develops resilience,” he says. “When students are given multiple opportunities to prototype (design, fail, redesign), it develops a growth mindset.”
The school’s personalised approach to learning – possible only because of its boutique size and small classes – is paying off! Just one year old, EtonHouse @ Orchard has already earned its first Cambridge IGCSE A* Grade: A Year 9 student (shown) scored an A* on her Spanish exams, and was ranked in the top 3-percent globally.
At most international schools, the Cambridge IGCSE exams are taught over two years and students take all of their subject exams at the end of Year 10. However, at EtonHouse @ Orchard, the Cambridge IGCSE exams are spread over three years. As Jolene explains, “Instead of getting students to take the exams when they have to, students can take their exams when they are ready – either in Year 9, 10 and 11.”
Rather than using a traditional, teacher-led pedagogy to ready its students for the Cambridge IGCSE exams, EtonHouse @ Orchard let’s students explore subjects through projects, often, in collaboration with peers in innovative classrooms like the Campfire, Mountaintop and Boardroom (shown). “They encourage students to find their own voice and be confident in sharing their views and opinions,” says Jolene.
In addition, EtonHouse @ Orchard has been inspired by Google’s “20-percent time” method, where employees are given 20 percent of their time to work on side projects, helping to foster innovation within the company. “The school has freed 20 percent of the timetable for students to work on a SMART project of their choice,” shares Jolene. “The results have been amazing. One student championed fundraising for APOPO Rats (rats who smell out landmines in Cambodia), while two other students worked on a project to clean up beaches and promote recycling.”
To promote learning for the real world, EtonHouse @ Orchard invites lawyers, business people and other professionals to simulate interviews and jobs for the students. Recently, the school hosted a series of talks by lawyers, who gave the students a glimpse of what their profession entails plus examples of cases done. The event will culminate soon, when the class splits into prosecution and defense, and students fend for their case, with the teacher and Principal Alec playing judge!
Truly, the school and staff aim to prepare their students for the 22nd century – a goal that extends from its enrolees in Primary Year 1 to 6 on up to Secondary Year 7 to 12. (Read about why EtonHouse is such a great through-train option in SG.)
