You shouldn’t limit your child’s school experience, as all schools in Singapore have strict guidelines for infectious diseases that have been set in place by the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Each educational institute is required to strictly abide by these guidelines to ensure the health and safety of every child enrolled there.

“However, if you’re still worried, ask the school staff some simple questions when you visit during a school tour,” says Salome Scott, Head Nurse at the Australian International School (AIS). First, confirm that the school has a regular cleaning schedule in place. Then, check with the teachers to see if the educational materials used in the classroom and in outdoor activities are also cleaned regularly.

“Don’t be afraid to ask them to explain their procedures for managing infectious diseases when students are at school, too,” she encourages. Another prudent question to consider: What is the institute’s return-to-school policy when a student is actually diagnosed with an infectious disease?

As of end of March 2020, Singapore was at a DORSCON Orange level. But, it’s important to note that if the local government raises the health alert levels – such as to a DORSCON Red level – then the school will issue recommendations regarding school closures, as guided by MOH and MOE.

“As such, if your child’s school does issue such an alert, you should follow it carefully,” she advises. “The school will also have procedures in place to ensure that your child’s learning is not disrupted.”
