GWA Singapore's international education environment
With no one dominant nationality, every culture is celebrated amongst students and teachers alike.
GEMS not only nurtures students to excel academically, but also in sports and the arts.
Choosing the right school for your child – especially in their formative years – is crucial. In a fast developing world where globalisation leaves its mark at every corner, it’s important to cultivate in our young ones an appreciation of the dynamism of cultural diversity.
It is in this very spirit of celebrating cultural diversity – both the differences and similarities – that GEMS World Academy (Singapore) has shaped an international environment that allows students to thrive as citizens of the world.
Even the team of educators at GEMS World Academy (Singapore) comprise of an international mix, facilitating an all-rounded, authentically global educational experience for students. With teaching experience around the world under their belts, the educators are able to open-mindedly facilitate a multi-faceted classroom environment with students of every culture and background.
Lynn White, for one, is an Early Years (K1) teacher at GEMS World Academy (Singapore) originally from Scotland. When asked to describe her teaching style, she emphasized the importance of building positive relationships and an atmosphere of trust and care in the classroom. An inspiring and nurturing learning environment as such allows students to grow through making connections to the real world and become global citizens.
Here’s what more David has to say about GEMS World Academy (Singapore).
How does GEMS World Academy (Singapore) compare to the education systems of other countries you have taught in?
GEMS World Academy (Singapore) is an international school, which takes students from anywhere in the world at any time, to possibly move anywhere in the world at any time.
The balanced programme requires all students to be involved in the Arts, Sports, and Academics. Incredible teachers, wonderful facilities, and a commitment to providing outstanding learning opportunities to students, parents and staff make it a unique international school.
In your years of teaching, why is it important to consider how “international” a school is for a child? How does GEMS World Academy (Singapore) meet these considerations?
Not all schools suit all children. An international curriculum must be incredibly rigorous, meeting the needs of not only the host country and international accrediting bodies, but must also ensure that the highly mobile global students within the school are well-supported for now, next, and later.
For GEMS World Academy (Singapore), this means that we have approximately 7 different accreditations from a variety of highly recognized organisations. It gives families reassurance of the rigour behind our many offerings.
We also have a strong support system for each student’s transition into the school, and, at a later date, possibly to a new learning institution elsewhere in the world.
How would you describe your leadership style, and how has this worked for you as a teacher at GEMS World Academy (Singapore)?
My leadership style is hands-on. All education leaders must be highly visible and available to all stakeholders of the school. It’s common to see our leadership team in many parts of the campus, at any time of day.
By being so engaged, we’ve been able to achieve so much already in the first 18 months of the life of the school. This engagement is a core facet of my leadership as well as that of the entire management team, and is an exciting component of GEMS World Academy (Singapore).
A piece of advice from David for parents looking to enroll their child in a new school: ensure that you’re very clear on what your musts are, and work closely with the school to make certain that they are able to meet these needs – spend time with the Admissions Advisors, meet the Education Leadership team, and take the opportunity to view classrooms in action.
GEMS World Academy (Singapore) prides itself on its world-class international education environment for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students. Find out more about the school, and better yet, experience all of this first-hand at their upcoming school tours on 14 May or 4 June 2016, where you can experience it all first-hand – speak to the School Leadership Team, interact with the educators, and discover the campus’ state-of-the-art facilities.
