Singaporeans and self-proclaimed coconut junkies Sera Kuek and Adeline Quek first talked about starting a business together over a coffee date in June 2016. This idea eventually evolved into koqo, a virgin coconut oil (VCO)-based skincare brand they co-founded in January 2017.
“Instead of calling our brand Kuek Quek, we put our initials, K and Q, together, and it sounds like “coco”-nuts,” says Sera. They then began searching for suitable skincare products and visited a few manufacturers in Bali. “We even had some samples made, but weren’t quite happy with the formula,” explains Sera. Eventually, Adeline discovered a high-quality coconut oil that they both liked immediately.
“It was good for skincare, hair care and could be consumed,” says Adeline, adding that the oil “stood heads and shoulders” over the other oils they had sampled in Bali and in Singapore. Adeline then got in touch with the farmer that had manufactured the oil and persuaded him to work exclusively with them.

“What sets our oil apart,” says Adeline, “is the way it is processed.” The oils are handmade using a traditional method called wet-milling: Freshly squeezed coconut milk is left to ferment naturally, after which the coconut oil is separated from the water and cream, and filtered for clear-as-water coconut oil.
The icing on the cake? “Our business contributes to sustainable development and future. Not only do we source our oil from a village-based community in Bali, we also contribute to a teenage education fund to keep the kids in school,”

koqo’s products can be used as a makeup remover, to hydrate dry skin and heal burns and cuts, soothe nappy rash, prevent dandruff and help tame frizz and unruly curls. “Our products work for all ages and skin types, particularly for those with eczema or sensitive skin. Additionally, everything is paraben-, sulphate- and animal cruelty-free, and is vegan,” says Sera. The products are available on koqo’s e-store, with free delivery for orders priced at $60 and above.
