In 2011, during a mission trip with her church to Timor-Leste, Lisa Tan met many children who were malnourished.
“As a foodie, I couldn’t imagine growing up with so little to eat.” Feeling compelled to help them, coupled with her past experience in the food and beverage industry, Lisa set up Ugly Cake Shop in 2013.
Unlike other cake shops, Lisa’s cakes stand out from the crowd. “We choose to stay away from artificial flavours, colours, preservatives and ingredients,” she shares, of her creatively decorated, exceptionally moist cakes. Not only does she import the finest ingredients, but her cakes are also fondant- and marzipan-free, and don’t use excessive sugar.
Lisa says she’s thankful to have found a “fun-loving team who are passionate about baking!” But, she admits, caring for her 8-month-old son Alexander can be challenging to balance with running a thriving business. To unwind after work, Lisa enjoys spending quality time with her husband Nicholas. “He’s generous with leg massages!” she jokes. She also enjoys dining at her favourite restaurants, including OSO Ristorante, Majestic Restaurant and Teppei Japanese Restaurant. And, she adds, “Smith Street Taps has an amazing selection of imported beers!”
