The business idea really stems back to my younger ‘going out’ years with my best friend who was a hairdresser,” explains Australian-born Ellie, who has more than 25 years of hair and makeup experience in Paris, London, Tokyo and Singapore.
“We had a whole system worked out, where she would do my hair and I would do her makeup – it quickly turned into a larger group of girls in her bedroom each week.” After moving to SG in 2001, and “having the idea in [her] head for over 10 years,” she finally opened The Big Blow in Cluny Court in 2014. What makes it different? “We were the first salon in Singapore to offer fast fixes,” says Ellie, who helps her clients get ready for events or special occasions with blowouts, up-dos, makeup and more.
Since launching the salon, Ellie has continued to stand out from competitors by incorporating new, in-demand services like her mobile service, which offers mini-makeovers regardless of location. “I often have hotel calls as early as 6 a.m., as a lot of female executives and CEOs – who fly in overnight – need to be ready for a breakfast meeting,” she says.

In 2018, 23 expats were awarded for their tremendous dedication. This 2019, a new batch of 22 Expatpreneur Awardees have been unveiled! All of them have one thing in common: Their brands help people “live well in Singapore” – The Finder’s core mission.
