Expatpreneur Awards 2019: How Best Green Business Award Winner Stephanie Dickson Is Making Sustainability SEXY

Learn how this grown-up third-culture kid started Green Is The New Black and The Conscious Festival.

“At Green Is The New Black, we’re on a mission to make sustainability mainstream, but also a little bit sexy,” says Stephanie, who is the winner of our inaugural “Best Green Business Award”.

The Australian-Scottish expat, who spent her teenage years in SG, has done this by creating a unique eco-system that includes physical events, online content and an advisory arm – all with the goal of “helping brands who are doing good flourish, while connecting them to consumers who care,” she explains.

Since launching the first annual The Conscious Festival here in 2015, and expanding it to Hong Kong last year, she and the GITNB team have hosted more than 13,000 people. “Now, we are a vegan, zero-waste event and, in Singapore, also carbonneutral,” says Stephanie of the well-attended events, which boast a marketplace for fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands plus a food fair and lots of live music.

Her own journey toward consciousness began after she’d been at her “dream job” – planning fashion events around Asia – for several years, and realised the fashion industry itself is quite polluting. “But, a lot of the communities I was trying to join were either too preachy, too business-y, or too hippy.” So, she founded her own!

Why is her work at GITNB so important? “Things we’re doing today are affecting our future – 10, 20, 30 years, and the future of our children,” she says. “We want to empower individuals to take little green steps every day.”
