I know why you’re reading this: to see if these treatments might really regrow your thinning hair or fix whatever hair or scalp situation you’re worried about.
While I won’t make any claims about TK TrichoKare hair and scalp centre, I will be honest about my experience there, and let you decide for yourself – or, even better, go for your own trial treatment! (Spoiler alert: There’s a promo code at the end of this article.)
First, a little about the centre: TrichoKare (pronounced as Try-ko-care) provides customised European herbal hair remedies by certified trichologists, or hair doctors. It’s been in business for 13 years and has five centres around Singapore. It has developed a Hair Fall Prevention System, designed to boost hair growth, and prevent hair fall and hair loss for both women and men of all ages.
Dr. Pooja Chhabra is the trichologist I recently met with at TrichoKare’s Velocity@Novena Square location. An Indian expat herself, she told me that she went to medical school in India before moving to Singapore four years ago, and getting certified by the globally recognised International Association of Trichologists. She is warm and friendly, and – for what it’s worth – her own long locks look amazing. That’s her, below.
Warning: Full Disclosure Ahead!
Dr. Chhabra made me feel at ease once I sat down in her office to answer a list of questions to help her customise my treatment. The questions ranged from what I eat to how much I sleep, as well as about my parents’ hair history (i.e., any thinning, baldness or conditions on either side) and whether I have any concerns or complaints about my hair and scalp.
That’s where this story gets embarrassing (and not because of the “after” photos, below, showcasing my grown-out roots and split ends!). No, it’s because my scalp used to itch. A lot.
The itchiness started a few months ago, when I switched to a new shampoo. Why didn’t I stop using said shampoo? Duh, it cost money. And, since I never saw any dandruff-y flakes, I didn’t think the problem was that bad. By the time I met Dr. Chhabra, the itchiness had mostly subsided.
But, given that I was meeting with an honest-to-goodness hair doctor, I figured I should fess up.
Getting a Closer Look
“I’m excited to see my scalp up close!” I said, when Dr. Chhabra pulled out a lens that would magnify my hair follicles by 200 percent. We were beginning the Hair & Scalp Analysis portion of the consultation. “A lot of people don’t want to see theirs,” the doctor replied neutrally.
Once I saw my magnified hair follicles and scalp, I understood why. My scalp was dry and pink with inflammation; dead skin flakes littered the surface. Dr. Chhabra pointed out some clogged hair follicles as well. Gross!
On the bright side, she confirmed, “You have good hair growth, and I don’t see any signs of hair loss.” (Hair loss is generally evidenced by empty hair follicles, just SYK.) The reason TrichoKare’s doctors show me/you/the customer this part is so that, after the treatment, you can see the “visual proof of the improved scalp condition.” Makes sense.
They’re All about Customisation
As I’ve already noted, TrichoKare aims to personalise every treatment for every client. For me (and my sad, dry scalp), Dr. Chhabra recommended the TriOxy treatment, which is a three-step process:
- OxyPeel: Designed to prevent follicles duct from being congested
- OxyJet: Aimed to help to accelerate scalp’s cell metabolism and improve blood circulation
- OxyNutrient: Intended to provide nutrients and boost hydration to the scalp
- Photodynamic Therapy: Laser light technology designed to supports hair regeneration and helps accelerate healing
She underscored that all of TrichoKare’s products – including its peels, masques, tonics, etc. – are made with premium European herbs and fruits, and said to be gentle but effective.
She then introduced me to Bernice, a hair specialist who’s been working at TrichoKare for five years (that’s her, above). Right off the bat, Bernice offered me fragrant rose tea and a biscuit along with a hot towel (and may or may not have refilled my tea and cookie order thrice!).
She explained every step of the process, and passed along helpful tips along the way (e.g., “Never use your fingernails when shampooing your hair – it can damage your scalp”). Noted! All in all, it was a very relaxing experience. Some highlights:
- Getting my hair washed and scalp massaged in the cocoon-like shampoo bar that is wallpapered in chic, black velvet flocked damask wallpaper
- Enjoying a fragrant hot pad wrapped around my neck and shoulders, intended to help reduce stress, which TrichoKare purports leads to hair loss
- Did I mention the tea and biscuits??
Dr. Chhabra later shared that many of TrichoKare’s 70-percent female clientele come for the “me” time – they can address their hair or scalp woes, while also receiving some much-needed pampering. Its male clients, however, are more focused on reversing pattern balding, and may opt for micro-needling or other such procedures. In addition, the clinic provides cut, colour and styling services, if clients desire them.
What about the Results?
Once I was back in Dr. Chhabra’s office, she got out her magnifying device and showed me how the flakes were gone and my hair strands looked smoother as well. IMO, my scalp felt truly “clean” for the first time in a while, and my hair itself was less dry and frizzy looking. Also, I felt way more chilled out than when I came into the clinic.
The TriOxy treatment I had costs about $300 if you only go for one session. That said, Dr. Chhabra says its best if done once a week, so the package deals are more affordable, from around $2,000 for 10 sessions.
