“Depression” is one of those words that get casually thrown around a lot.
People may confuse feelings of unhappiness and frustration from stressful problems as forms of depression. They may have failed an exam or lost their job; feel lonely, overworked or financially strained; be missing home or having a hard time with their children – these ups and downs of life are common. However, the emotions associated with these feelings shouldn’t be confused with symptoms of clinical depression (though it is still important to talk to someone about your concerns if they become too much to bear).
Here are some tips from Dr. Nav Uppal from International Medical Clinic:
What are the symptoms of depression?
Patients with clinical depression tend to experience a constant and persistent feeling of sadness and moodiness every day for at least two weeks. These feelings may be accompanied with weepiness, marked loss of interest or pleasure in everyday activities – even for activities they would normally enjoy. For severe cases, there may be recurring thoughts of death. Sometimes these thoughts progress into plans for suicide, which can affect their everyday life and become extremely overwhelming.
What are some other telltale signs?
Other symptoms include insomnia or sleep disturbance, where the person may have difficulties falling asleep or waking up early; either a loss of appetite or sudden weight gain; fatigue; low tolerance with a penchant for becoming irritable; and a short temper.
They may also experience poor concentration or indecisiveness; or feelings of worthlessness, loneliness, and excessive or inappropriate guilt. They may also harshly criticise themselves for perceived faults or mistakes, as well as engage in reckless behaviour such as substance or alcohol abuse, compulsive gambling, or reckless driving.
Do seek help if your loved ones or you are experiencing any combinations of the above symptoms and know that they or you, are never alone in this.
