Robert Clive and the Unexpected Empire
This is the story of the founding of the British Empire. It traces the events in the 1700s that led a group of merchants and traders (among them Robert Clive) to becoming the rulers of India and the Colonies. Wherever possible the speaker has used original colonial art to illustrate her talk. The circumstances surrounding the ‘Blackhole’ incident of Calcutta will be explained. The Battle of Plassey will also be described and shown using original, onsite pictures of the battlefield.
Lectures are held either in the Ngee Ann auditorium (in the basement) or in the River Room (level 2) at the Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM), 1 Empress Place, Singapore 179555. Refreshments will be provided from 10:30 and the lectures will begin promptly at 11:00am. Latecomers are asked to enter via the rear door.
