Elaborate hotel brunch buffets with free flow bubbly are great. And to be sure, there are plenty to experience here in Singapore. But sometimes, a casual spot, with cozy ambience and unpretentious food are all you need for a sleepy Sunday.
Aussies may recognise the look and feel of Luxe as it is the Singapore franchise of the popular Sydney hot spot (with the same name). Luxurious? Yes. But accessible to all. Expect to find a mix of favourites from down under like the “Australian Breakfast” with scrambled eggs, bacon, cumin roasted tomatoes, pork and fennel sausages, avocado and mushrooms and Eggs Benedict Prosciutto Hollandaise. Choose fresh juices, smoothies, and coffee until you’re ready to move on to beer or wine. Go after 12 pm and order from the entire menu, including burgers, pastas and seafood dishes. (Brunch menu is available until 3 pm.)

2. Cafe Melba
This East Coast joint is a hugely popular weekend spot for families. Parents enjoy lingering over their coffee while their kids are busy enjoying the expansive green lawns its bouncy castle (weekends only). And the menu pleases the whole gang! Traditional favourites like ham and cheese omelettes and banana pancakes meet more daring plates like ibu norsiah beef rendang and lamb vindaloo to satisfy whatever you crave. (And the pizzas get great reviews too!) They do not take reservations (for breakfast and lunch) and get very busy so head out early. Last order for breakfast is at 4 pm.

Touted by some as having the best coffee on the island, Common Man Roasters is a must for any quality brunch list. (Okay, the Kentucky Mary with Redemption rye bourbon, smokey bacon, spices, tomato juice and a touch of red wine, sounds pretty good too.)The group that owns and runs CMCR, led by Harry Grover, Spa Esprit Group, and Five Senses Coffee, have brewed a pretty impressive food menu as well: Fluffy brioche French toast, berries compote, premium maple syrup & Kapiti vanilla ice cream; phyllo-wrapped soft boiled organic egg, crispy feta, fresh cucumber & tomato, olives & hummus with pita bread; grilled juicy “chilli” boneless chicken with crushed avocado salsa & caramelized lemon? Yes, please. All of it. One of everything.

There is an argument to be made for a small menu with few options. Artichoke makes the argument: “We keep our menu tight so you only get the best of us.” Indeed, you do. This funky Middle Eastern restaurant uses local ingredients whenever possible and makes no excuses for having loud music and limited high chairs. Try the Huevos Rancheros with ful medames, avocado, jalapeño, lamb merguez sausages, crushed hash browns and fried egg or the veg-friendly Haloumi & Mushrooms with smashed avocados, Kranji farm mushrooms, tomato salad, rocket and Turkish toast. Brunch served on weekends only. (Come for dinner Tuesday – Saturday.)

Not your average French Toast
Inspired by the Goethe-Institut Singapore next door, LoKal borrows the German spelling of “local” to bring you a cosy and casual neighbourhood restaurant. With nearly, everything made in-house from their peanut butter to their yogurt to their bacon, you’ll taste why this is must-try brunch spot. “Pimp your breakfast” with over 15 different options from smoked mackerel to cauliflower & cheese to handmade ricotta. Or, go for something more “local” – like Kaya Toast – or go for the “unch” part of brunch with bangers & mash. Brunch served 7 days per week. (Dinner is Tuesday – Saturday, 5:30 – 10).
