Canadian International School’s new French-English bilingual programme is the only one in Singapore that is fully aligned to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP).
It aims to educate students to become bilingual, biliterate and bicultural in both French and English through an inquiry-based teaching approach.

All French classes in Canadian International School’s new programme will be taught by Albana Bertin, who has taught French to school children for over 15 years in different parts of the world such as Kosovo, Angola, Australia and now Singapore. Albana also speaks English, Italian, Spanish and Albanian, and for many years worked closely with Alliance Française to prepare students for their official language exams.
“Five years ago, we successfully launched a Chinese-English bilingual programme for students in kindergarten to grade 6, developing a reputation as offering one of the best bilingual programmes of its kind amongst international schools in Singapore,” explains Albana, saying that CIS now believes it is well-placed to offer an additional programme – this time French-English.
Each class has two teachers – one native English speaker and one native French speaker. “Students also have equal exposure to both languages – classes are in English one day and French the next,” shares Albana.
“We will place a strong focus on creating authentic experiences where learning mirrors real-life activities. Instead of textbooks, we will also be using authentic materials (TV, songs, stories, websites) as much as possible, and engaging students in active, hands-on activities like acting out plays, cooking and participating in quizzes.
All learning will be done through inquiry,” she says, adding that the overall approach will help to motivate students and make their learning more meaningful.
