In Singapore, you don’t need a licence to get sweaty in public.
In fact, you (and your boo) are encouraged to get into shape just by looking up and following the numerous public recreational activities in SG — without paying. Here are 4 free, family-friendly exercise programmes to check out on your day out.
Early birds, this is for you: Sunrise in the City (SITC) is a studio-gym based morning workout programme initiated by the Health Promotion Board (HPB). And as they say, the opportunities for early risers are endless — the programme has a combination of over 40 workout sessions such as aerobics-dance workouts, cardio, strength, and mind-body programmes, held at over 20 different locations, in and around business hubs. Look for the sessions here.
Love the outdoors and want to get your boogie on? Then sign up for the Sundays @ The Park programme. Organised by the Health Promotion Board (HPB) every Sunday, you can find activities being held in amazing parks all across Singapore from Bishan to Serangoon and beyond. With a line up including ALL that Jazz (dance workout), KPopX Fitness (K-Pop dance aerobics) and Bolly Dazz (Bollywood dance-ercise), to name a few — it’s a real hoot to workout in the greenery. More information can be found here.
Naturally, you would think there will be daily activities available at the sports, entertainment and lifestyle central, Singapore Sports Hub. There are such activities, but the best thing is that most of them are free. Learn-To-Play, FIT-sessions and Partners’ Programmes are all-inclusive, community programmes that are suitable for everyone (just take note of age restrictions for the kids).
You can try learning a new sport with a certified coach on hand to help you, or join a group activity class. Options vary by month, but you can expect to see basketball, beach volleyball, fencing and even lacrosse. And if you are after fitness classes, these include bootcamps, Zumba, kickboxing, yoga, pilates and cardio blast. Check out the latest schedule here.
If the heat is just too much for you and you want to head indoors, chances are, you won’t have to stroll too far from home. Now there are “Mall Workouts” you can attend – all before you do your grocery shopping. Bedok Point, AMK Hub and Velocity @ Novena Square are just a few of the participating malls that will have you doing yoga, kickboxing, Zumba and piloxing (and break for a coffee stop afterwards if you want to). The latest schedule and registration details are here.
