Expatpreneur Awards 2018: Fragrances Were Always Cherylynne Clews’ Passion. It Motivated Her To Start Her First Business In Singapore

Today, To Be Calm is the go-to store for candles, scents and all types of fragrances.

“I once had a lady talking to me about her son who was at crossroads in his career, he wanted to leave engineering and become an actor,” recalls Australian Cherylynne Clews, who started To Be Calm – her affordable, high-quality home fragrance company – in SG in 2014.

“I showed her the ‘Prosperity’ candle, which has a quote on it from Cecil Beaton: ‘Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert the integrity of purpose and imaginative vision across the play-it-safers, the creatures of commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.’ She burst into tears and said that it was exactly what she needed to tell him. It was so rewarding to see her response.”

Cherylynne believed that fragrances create an optimal state of mind. And, back when she was a Global Vice President for American Express, her colleagues appreciated her efforts. “I would create recipes for them to help with focus or jet lag. Or, if we were to have a negotiation, I might fragrance the room with mandarin and lavender to help keep people calm.” Once she took a sabbatical from her all-consuming job, and found herself in SG for a second stint, the mom of two kids vowed to start “living and stop existing”.

She took candle-making classes and founded To Be Calm, and has been customising fragrances, refining product design and figuring out the ins and outs of opening retail spaces in SG ever since. Her impressive partnerships to date is proof of her success: Maggie Beer, Singapore Botanic Gardens, RISIS, Singapore Tourism Board, TANGS and Takashimaya.
