Prior to establishing The Expat Fairs, Betty helmed two other businesses in Hong Kong and Shanghai, but she says she loves her SG-based business best.
Not only does she get to help other female business owners, she also admires the “transparency of law and regulation, and the honesty and straightforward manner of people in Singapore.”
Betty is also one of 23 winners of The Finder‘s 2018 Expatpreneur Awards.
It takes commitment, focus and stamina to keep your business going in the long run, says Betty. “Another challenge for many expat-owned businesses is the lack of a network or connection that we would’ve had back home, which means we need to build it from scratch,” says the Hong Kong native, adding that this trial-and-error effort can be time-consuming and often eats into your personal family time. “Singapore is a very transient market with high operating costs and strict manpower requirements,” says Betty, saying that “one must run faster and work smarter than others to succeed here.”
While The Expat Fairs has churned out a healthy profit over the years, Betty has always made to sure to put a good portion of it back into “technology, new media and staff training” to ensure that her team are always up to date. The result? “We’re growing momentum and have started expanding the fairs into premium SG malls,” she says proudly.
Currently, Expat Fairs holds three annual fairs during spring, autumn and Christmas, and also hosts a wide range of monthly markets and pop-up events. Get the latest updates by following The Expat Fairs on Facebook or sign up for their e-newsletter on The Expat Fairs website.
