The benefits of breastfeeding for moms & bubs

Breastfeeding offers a multitude of health benefits for both mother and baby. The World Health Organisation recommends babies be breastfed until the age of six months. Not all women are able to breastfeed and some babies cannot be breastfed. Alternatively new mums can pump their breast milk and feed their babies by bottle, ensuring bub receives good nutrition and antibodies in the first few months, weeks or even days of life.

Benefits for mum

  • Breastfeeding encourages the uterus to contract within seven days, toning your abdominal muscles, helping you regain your shape faster.
  • It burns up to 500 calories a day - the equivalent of a 10-kilometre run!
  • It releases the feel-good hormones oxytocin and prolactin, ensuring you can cope with night feeds and a better chance of fighting both postnatal depression and breast cancer.
  • It's convenient and cost-effective. Whether you're at home, out or travelling, breastfeeding means you can comfort your baby quickly.

Benefits for bub

  • Your breast milk is custom-made for your baby. It contains essential nutrients and antibodies to help protect while nourish your child, offering immunity against illness.
  • Reduced risk of ADHD later in life.
  • Skin-to-skin contact comforts baby and ensures bonding. This is also achievable with bottle-feeding. To ensure bub stays warm and isn't distracted to enjoy a full feed, use a nursing shawl or wrap for privacy.
