Top three tips on how to successfully deliver an impromptu speech

Nobody enjoys being caught in a position to make an impromptu speech. This can be due to several reasons including simply not being prepared, having difficulty organising your train of thought in front of a group of people and also the fear of speaking on a topic you're not familiar with. However, it may be part of your job role to be called on to speak without any warning. Here are some ways to prepare for this:

  • Keep up with developments in your field Regularly read popular and professional publications related to your industry. Read a daily newspaper plus a weekly news magazine and watch a regular national or local radio news programme to keep up-to-date with current affairs.
  • Have a few anecdotes and remarks ready Track strange statistics, unusual experiences and other quirky facts as and when you come across them. This will make your speech more interesting.
  • Observe speakers in informative talk shows Listen to how these speakers respond then pwut yourself in the same situation. How would you have answered that question? This is one way of stimulating your mind and keeping imaginative.
