TF: How has FairPrice Antique evolved over the years?
HE: I initially started the business operating from my home. Business grew rapidly so we moved to larger premises on Henderson Road then, after six years trading, we relocated to Tan Boon Liat Building where we are today. It's been an extremely successful move. The current location is central within a cluster of other complementary businesses so we attract high customer traffic. Due to demand, we recently extended our trading hours to open seven days. TF: What challenges do you face when selecting pieces?
HE: We constantly strive to find good quality antique pieces with an interesting edge. There's also a challenge to maintain affordability as prices in China continue to rise, especially over the past five years.
TF: Do Asian-inspired antiques, furniture and home décor represent a niche market? HE: Yes. These items are very popular. People are more creative these days and choose to mix modern furniture with special Chinese pieces giving the home more character. It's important not to overdo any one type of furniture in your home. Customers tend to move with the times when it comes to choosing between a clean finished product and rustic pieces.
