Since moving to Singapore in 2004 from the UK, Mano Griffiths has heard friends complain about the research and disappointment often involved with booking vacations online. By 2010, she decided to put her 14 years of travel expertise to the test by opening the Singapore branch of Barefoot Traveller. Operational in the UK since 1986, Barefoot Traveller offers tailor-made vacations and has now grown to offer Barefoot Sports, specialising in holidays with a sporting emphasis such as Rugby World Cup tours or attending a Muay Thai boxing camp in Thailand. Sports tours for teams, schools and organisations can also be organised. Future plans include Weddings Abroad, for couples needing help in organising an overseas celebration.
TF: Any learning experiences to share?
MG: It's been a pleasant surprise to find 90 percent of my business is from repeat customers and the largest percentage of new business comes via word-of-mouth recommendations. The biggest challenge I've faced was initially ensuring my licenses and insurance complied with Singapore's governing travel body, the Singapore Tourism Board. It was an expensive and time-consuming process, but absolutely necessary.
TF: How does Barefoot Traveller vary from internet travel sites?
MG: Being part of an expat family, with a husband who works long hours and a daughter who spends a lot of time at school and in extra-curricular activities, I know the best way to spend quality time with my loved ones is when we're all on vacation together. At Barefoot, you get to speak to a real person. You can tell me exactly what you're looking for and I'll only provide options based on those requirements. I've visited most of the destinations I recommend, so I'm able to give a first-hand account. We can also satisfy additional requests such as extra beds or interconnecting rooms, which can be hard to confirm online.
TF: Are tailor-made holidays expensive?
MG: Not at all. We all have different needs and wants when we travel and it's your holiday. But you should get what you want, for the price you've budgeted. Barefoot Traveller works hard with our suppliers to negotiate the best possible rates, ensuring you enjoy greater savings than if you'd booked the same holiday yourself. We also organise complimentary value-added services such as massages, tours and room upgrades. And we look after every aspect of your holiday. From the best flights and times, to the most suitable hotels, return transfers and guided sightseeing experiences. You won't have to stress about a thing!
