Nikoi Island: a secluded sanctuary near Bintan
VANESSA STRACK travels 85 kilometres south east of Singapore to the stunning island paradise of Nikoi.
TO DO Snorkel the reefs to get up close and personal with stunning coral and brilliantly-coloured fish. If you're feeling adventurous, try paddle boarding, kayaking, sailing to neighbouring deserted islands, rock climbing, mountain biking and trekking. Nature lovers can explore the flora and fauna-rich island by walking through the tropical rainforest, or simply strolling along the white, sandy beach. To take things slow, sip cocktails by the huge granite boulders of the rock pools, or book a relaxing massage.
STAY Each of the one to three-bedroom 15 beach houses on the island is crafted from driftwood with alang alang thatched roofs, designed to maximise natural airflow from the gentle sea breezes. Indoors you'll find vaulted ceilings, handmade electric fans and king sized beds draped with generous mosquito nets, while outdoors there's an open-air lounge area, day beds, sun loungers and a balé for massages. Book the entire island, or opt for an individual beach house priced from $330 (one-bedroom), $550 (two-bedroom) and $770 (three-bedroom) per night.
EAT Following pre-dinner cocktails at the bar, dine at the beachside restaurant or at your beach house. The constantly-evolving menu focuses on simple cooking methods with a focus on fresh produce, barbecuing and local flavours, with daily menus charged at $90 per adult and $45 for children above four years of age.
GETTING THERE Take a one-hour ferry trip from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Bintan. Nikoi is a one-hour drive across Bintan and a 30-minute speedboat ride away, with transfers charged at $90 per adult and $45 per child inclusive of VIP clearance upon arrival and departure. www.brf.com.sg
