6 ways to care for your candle
1. Don't burn a candle on a flammable surface. Place it in container or holder specifically designed for candles. The holder must be heat-resistant, sturdy and the base should be 30 percent bigger than the candle to capture dripping wax, for maximum oxygen flow and to protect surfaces from heat.
2. Always light candles in a draught-free area. Avoid fans, air-conditioning vents and ceiling fans, as they encourage rapid, uneven burning, flame flare-ups and soot.
3. Always trim wicks to one centimetre before burning, to reduce smoke.
4. The first time you light a pillar candle, let it burn close to the rim to prevent tunnelling. Burn it for one hour per two and-a-half centimetres of candle diameter, to allow a pool of wax to develop - preventing the candle wall from collapsing inwards.
5. Don't use a knife or a sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass candleholder. The knife might scratch or weaken the glass, causing it to break. Instead, place the holder under hot water to soften the wax for easy removal.
6. Remove dust or fingerprints from your candle by gently rubbing the surface with a piece of nylon - such as stockings or a soft cloth - either dry, or slightly damp.
