Treat injuries
Steady support
Most of us will sustain some kind of bodily ache or pain at one time or another due to a sports injury, body trauma or prolonged poor posture. And although injuries heal with time, recovery can be hastened if care is administered early and proper treatment is given.
It’s certainly important to follow the “RICE” – Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation – regime. But knowing the exact and appropriate steps to take for an injury is even more effective. This not only speeds up the recovery process, it decreases the chances of any re-injury occurring.
A good example is when you trip and sprain your ankle. There are various degrees of sprains and different types of ligaments that may sustain injury. A trained physiotherapist is able to assess and prescribe the correct “strapping” and “support” for your ankle as it heals and will also introduce appropriate strengthening and balancing exercises at a suitable time. It’s only through complete rehabilitation that injuries will heal as fast – and as soundly – as possible. Physio Kit
Recurring backache
Back pain can range from a sharp catching pain to a dull ringing ache. And from centralised lower back pain, to pain, numbness and a pins and needles sensation that radiates throughout the body. Though back pain usually fades in four to six weeks, the deep stabilising muscles along the spinal vertebrae can remain impaired. Research shows that these deep muscles may not be activated as effectively as before, so the activity of our superficial muscles is often increased, diminishing the vertebrae’s stability and predisposing the back to re-injury. Physiotherapy can help in the following ways:
Spinal Decompression Therapy (DTS): traction by cycling through distraction and relaxation.
Interferential therapy/Ultrasound/Laser: reduces pain and aids in blood flow.
Manual therapy and mobilisation: restores restricted mobility between the vertebrae and reduces pain/spasm.
Back rehabilitation programmes: to improve posture and prevent and manage chronic lower back pain. Classes consist of mat and exercise-ball based exercises, designed specifically for those experiencing lower back pain. As the flexibility, strength and endurance of the abdominal and back muscles’ is improved, better trunk stability and reduced back pain is experienced.

Core strength
Having strong core stability is being able to control the alignment of the spine under load – local stabilisation – and the movement of the trunk through space – global stabilisation. Research proves acute back pain interrupts the function of the local stabilisers, which return to normal in only 20 percent of individuals once their pain subsides. The remaining 80 percent of people suffer from recurrent back pain.
Determining which category you fall into requires specialised testing procedures by an experienced physiotherapist. A course of specific exercises is then advised to aid recovery and prevent any reoccurrence of back pain. Physiofocus
