How to avoid bunions
Ill-fitting footwear can cause a host of problems. One of the most common is a bunion – a prominent bump usually found on the inner part of the foot, close to the big toe joint. A person with bunions will experience inflammation, swelling and soreness, which is typically caused by wearing improperly-fitted footwear, or shoes with a constrictive or tapered “toe box”.
Before your condition worsens to the point of needing surgery, the first step in treating bunions is to consult your family doctor or podiatrist to determine the cause and the best solution available. Soaking your feet in warm water may provide temporary relief, but to prevent bunions forming:
Wear properly-fitted stockings, socks and footwear – not too tight, or too loose.
Only purchase footwear with a wide toe box.
Opt for footwear or arch supports which provide proper balance, even weight distribution and adequate shock absorption.
Always maintain a healthy body weight.
