Rattan & wicker care

How to keep rattan in tip-top shape

Rattan is one of the most maintenance-free furniture materials available and requires very little care.

  • Remove dust with a soft brush or the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

  • Keep rattan furniture looking its best and protect the furniture's finish by occasionally wiping it with a damp cloth, followed by an application of quality furniture polish. Lemon oil is an excellent natural polish, but don't use it on white or whitewash finishes.

  • To remove body oil and dirt from rattan try Murphy's Oil Soap.

  • Touch up small scratches on dark rattan with Old English Scratch Cover. Follow this with a spray of clear lacquer, available from any hardware store. The clear lacquer is also perfect for touch ups on rattan with a natural finish. To touch up white or whitewashed rattan brush on a very small amount of white paint with the tip of your finger, try Krylon Glossy White spray paint.

  • If the binding or wrap of your rattan loosens, return it back to its original position by applying White Elmer's Glue to the area. Hold the rattan in place while the glue is drying by covering the repaired area with plastic wrap and then tightly wrapping tape over the plastic wrap. Remove the tape and the wrap when dry.

  • Simple colour touch-ups on rattan pieces can be done with furniture markers or pens -available at DIY stores.
