Mixing east & west

How to combine the best of both worlds...

Create a contemporary Asian interior

If you love Asian furniture and artefacts, but are unsure how to make those pieces translate to a contemporary interior - or a move back home - read on.

  1. Use unusual furniture as an accent or a focal point in a modern interior.

  2. Don't overcrowd special pieces - let them shine. In this way you can really enjoy each item and the memories it invokes.

  3. Be confident when decorating. Mixing old and new pieces provides an element of contrast, a sense of fun and the unexpected in a contemporary interior.

  4. For unique furniture to work, think of the scale of the piece. Don't let an object overwhelm the rest of the room - or vice versa. Ensure the proportions of both the room and item are complementary.

  5. Colour, texture and dimension are evident in any piece of furniture - just like an artwork - so always select furniture with this in mind.

  6. To create a balanced and restful interior, group similar items together and harmonise colours.

  7. Keep an eye out for unique pieces to remind you of your time in Asia. You're unlikely to get the same quantity and quality back home - wherever that may be.

Mix ‘n' match

The Yin and Yang, the old and the new, the left-brain and the right brain - these contrarian world views are not necessarily mutually exclusive. The twain can meet - and very effectively when it comes to home décor. Mixing modern furniture with traditional or ethnic styles can bring out the best qualities of each. But it should be done with thought and care to ensure the best aesthetic appeal.

  • Find a unified idea to bind all the pieces together, such as a fabric or colour. The use of texture is equally as important.

  • Don't segment the room into half modern and half traditional. Bring elements together for true cohesion. WTP
