Lessons in lighting
Infuse your home with a warm glow...
Lamps add character to a room and the base can be a piece of art in itself.
The glow of a lamp is far gentler than overhead or fluorescent light.
For a romantic feel, use a lamp or dimmer switch.
To add a punch of colour to a room, cover a shade in a striking fabric.
Do justice to a striking artwork and Illuminate it with picture lights.
Use wall uplighters for a unique effect.
Chandeliers and pendant lights are back in fashion and add drama. Place a classic chandelier in a truly modern space for impact. Or, if your living area is decorated in a classic theme, opt for a chandelier made from a unique material such as capiz shell. The resulting look is far less serious, but dramatic nonetheless. Design Intervention
-Use lamps of differing heights throughout the room to create separate areas of light and shade while adding depth and interest to a room's ambience.
-Effective lighting gives dramatic impact to artworks and plants and adds a further dimension to lesser-used parts of a room.
-Table lamps are easy to place in any part of the house. When choosing a table lamp, ensure the base and shade are in proportion and the bulb is not visible. Always opt for bulb wattage that will result in a warm glow, rather than a harsh light.
-Floor lamps and cluster ceiling lighting offer adjustable light and take up little space. An stylish design also makes an interesting conversation piece. Piece of Mine
Using candles in the home...
The first time you light a candle, burn it for one hour for every inch of its diameter. This allows a pool of wax to extend to the outside rim, preventing your candle from forming a canyon in its centre. Burning candles in this way "sets" their memory, next time you light your candle it will remember to burn correctly.
Regularly trim candlewicks to quarter of an inch for a clean, smoke-free burn. If the candle is still giving off smoke, extinguish it immediately and check for debris before relighting. Remember, scented candles do give off more smoke than unscented candles and candles need to breathe. If you burn a candle in a small room, it's likely to start issuing smoke.
When you burn a highly scented candle, mushrooming will sometimes occur on the wick. Simply trim the wick.
Never "blow out" a candle. The most effective way to extinguish the flame of a candle is to use a candle snuffer. If you don't own a snuffer, place your forefinger in front of the flame before you blow it out. In this way, air will hit the flame from the sides - instead of head on. Candle Collection
