Redecorating for renters

If you're renting your home, you may be reluctant to spend money on someone else's property. But simple low-cost updates can make you feel more at home and are worth the initial investment. Remember, it's the tiny details that transform a rented house into a home.

Repaint walls Bring vibrant, radiant colours into your living space. If you're unable to experiment with colour, remember white comes in many shades such as Lilac, Rose and Apple, each offering a subtle change in tone to each room.

Change curtains Updating window dressings needn't be expensive.

  • Save up to 50 percent on new curtains by using a raw silk imitation fabric or a "2-in-1" synthetic blend - translucent enough for day and thick enough for privacy at night.
  • If you prefer night curtains with blackout, use blackout with a textile coating, available in variety of colours, textures and patterns.
  • If your night curtains are usable but look dull, opt for new sheers and tiebacks. Either buy ready-made, or decorate existing tiebacks with new trimmings or tassels.

Detachable covers
Opt for slip-on or Velcro-fixed sofa and chair covers to easily coordinate with your new surroundings and save on frequent upholstery.
