Getting the most out of candles

  • Trim wicks to one centimetre before lighting it to reduce smoke.
  • The first time you light a pillar candle, let it burn as close to the rim as possible to prevent tunnelling. A general rule of thumb is each time you light such candles, always let them burn for one hour per two and-a-half centimetres of diameter. This allows a pool of wax to develop, preventing the candle wall from caving in.
  • Place candles in a large container to give them as much "space" as possible for maximum oxygen flow.
  • Never burn a candle on a surface that might catch fire. Always use a holder specifically designed for candle use - heat resistant, sturdy and large enough to accommodate melted wax. The candleholder should be at least 30 percent bigger at the base of the candle to capture dripping wax and protect furniture surfaces from heat.
  • Always light candles in a draught-free area. In Singapore it's particularly important to watch out for fans, air-conditioning vents and ceiling fans. This will prevent rapid, uneven burning and help avoid flame flare-ups and soot.
  • Never use a knife or any sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass candleholder. The knife might scratch or weaken the glass, causing it to break.
Instead run the holder through hot water to soften wax for easy removal.
  • Remove dust or fingerprints from your candle by gently rubbing the surface with a dry or slightly damp piece of nylon - such as stockings - or a soft cloth.
