Mattress magic: buying & maintenance
To stay healthy, buying the right mattress and bedding is as important as eating well and exercising. When purchasing your next mattress, consider the following to make sure you find the right mattress for you:
- Research online to learn more about different mattress brands and styles so you can make an informed decision.
- If you sleep with a partner, opt for queen or king-size to accommodate you both comfortably. If you go for a queen, consider a king-size duvet.
- Lie on the mattress of your choice for a minimum of 15 minutes in your usual sleeping position, to test for true comfort.
- Try beds with differing levels of firmness - firm, pillow-top and plush. What you think you prefer may be different in reality.
- Compare different types of mattresses. Try innerspring, memory foam, air and water.

Mattress maintenance
- Flip your mattress every six months to prevent body indentation.
- Don't use water or cleaning fluid on a mattress, you run the risk of damaging the upholstery material. If you really must clean, vacuum.
- To remove stains, use mild soap and very little water. Quickly blot and dry the damp area using a hairdryer.
