Caring for bronze
Bronze is an extremely hardy, durable metal which can last for centuries. Bronze naturally reacts to atmospheric conditions, changing colour. This natural patina is also the most delicate element of your antique. To maintain the natural patina of bronze antiques and sculptures:
- Display in a well-ventilated area, away from excessive heat and humidity.
- Dust and clean with a soft cloth, soft shoe brush, toothbrush or the nozzle brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner.
- For thorough cleaning, test a small area first with a mild soap and distilled water. Then rinse and dry thoroughly.
- To wax, you can use an inert car wax, which should not yellow over time. Apply a very thin, even coat and allow the wax to dry for six to 12 hours, before buffing to a sheen with a rag or soft-bristle brush. A second coat will add additional gloss, if desired. Should humidity be a problem, you may need to wax your bronze work frequently.
- Never use abrasive polishes, brushes or chemicals - they can scratch metal surfaces.
- If you prefer a more natural patina, let the wax coating wear thin to enjoy the gradual aging process of your collectible.
