Decking dos & don'ts
Water When it comes to the rapid deterioration of decks, water is the major culprit. Wood expands when it's wet and contracts upon drying. As a result, fasteners pop and boards often warp, crack and split. If the wood is constantly wet, you're also creating a perfect breeding ground for fungus and bacteria, leading to wet rot that can over time turn wood to "mush". Make your deck look its best for longer by making sure to brush it of excess water after heavy rain. Also, sweep your deck regularly and clear puddles or dirt and leaves, which are known to retain moisture.
Sun Ultraviolet rays can break down the bonds among wood cells, but as these rays only penetrate wood by around 1/100th of an inch, sun damage is usually limited to the wood's surface. Interestingly, a damaged surface actually protects the healthier wood below. By sanding damage away, you're actually exposing fresh wood to harm. The best way to maintain a wooden deck in a sunny area is to regularly apply a liberal coating of sealant or stain.
Insects Both Ironwood and Merbau are insect resistant, so make a good timber of choice. XinZhan Materials, Tel: 9424 4660, Email: xinzhanmaterials@yahoo.com.sg
