Perhentian Islands
WHY GO Located in the north-eastern part of Malaysia, the Perhentian Islands - or Pulau Perhentian - are located approximately 64 kilometres south of the border with Thailand. These two small, wild islands are the perfect paradise if you're looking for a relaxed beach holiday. Not as popular as Redang Island, the Perhentian Islands offer peace and tranquillity. With clear, warm waters and white sandy beaches, these quiet islands are ideal for a laidback, four-day vacation.
TO DO Go snorkelling in front of your bungalow and discover a wide variety of tropical fish such as the Angel and Trigger sub-species, as well as a large selection of colourful coral. Equipment can be rented at most hotels. To visit some of the best beaches and snorkelling points on both islands, rent a small boat for the day. Shark Point is one of the most interesting areas, where you can snorkel surrounded by non-threatening Blacktip reef sharks.
Sign up with a dive club and don SCUBA gear to see turtles, small sharks and many more tropical fish further into the depths. All diving centres on the islands provide lessons and expeditions according to your level of experience. For the most skilled, a dive to Sugar Wreck is an experience not to be missed.
You can also explore the islands on foot using a series of trails which lead high into the jungle, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Perhentian and the islands' diverse flora and fauna. Try your hand at canoeing, beach volleyball, or simply unwind on the fine, white sand. Sunbathing between the jungle and the clear blue water, you'll find your cares drifting away - as you're lulled to sleep by the warmth of the afternoon sun.
