Dental care for mums-to-be

If you're trying to conceive, it's best to have a dental check-up in advance - in order for any necessary dental work to be completed prior to you falling pregnant. Good oral health greatly increases your chances of enjoying a normal pregnancy unmarred by dental problems, allowing you to carry your baby safely to term. Pre-conception checks should include:

  • X-rays - best avoided during pregnancy.
  • Prophylaxis (scaling). Women with existing gingivitis - inflammation of the gums - have been proven to experience a much higher incidence of premature delivery, directly related to unhealthy gums.

Mums-to-be should also seek advice on how to care for your baby's oral health, manage thumb/finger sucking and pacifier use, prevent cavities and the best age for your child's first dental visit. Dr Florence Li and Associates, Tel: 6887 3104, www.drflorenceli.com
