Before re-varnishing or painting old furniture, test a trial patch on a small part of the furniture that isn't very visible. If wrinkles form, this means the furniture has been painted with an old base paint and any additional layers will dry slowly and unevenly. For a good result you may have to strip away the existing paint using sandpaper. But always consult a carpenter first, as some older pieces of furniture cannot tolerate such treatment. When painting a room with limited light avoid using a pale colour. This usually only plays up shadows and often makes a room seem "cold". Consider a deeper colour. They are more luxurious and can enhance an intimate ambience - turning a lack of light into an asset. Design Intervention
