Laundering trimmings
First remove the trimmings using tweezers or sewing scissors to un-stitch them without tearing the fabric underneath. Soak the trimmings in warm water and a pH balanced liquid soap. Rinse thoroughly to remove any soap residue. Dry them in a ventilated room. Shake any fringes while they are damp to re-shape them and re-sew. Remember:
The majority of trimmings can be dry-cleaned.
The majority of borders can be ironed at low temperatures.
Fringes and tassels can be cleaned with a damp soft brush. If you just want to dust them protect them with a fine material such as stockings and then vacuum.
Do not wash or spin handmade trimmings.
Distilled water is best used on delicate trimmings and fabric as it is less abrasive and will not alter the original colour.
Remove shoe polish stains with a cotton pad and ethyl alcohol.
Moderate soiling from general wear and tear can be washed with a mixture of water and vinegar.
